Celebrating Maine Seafood All Summer Long

This week and into the weekend (August 3 – 7 ) is the Maine Lobster Festival, held in Rockland, Maine about 2 hours downeast of Portland on our scenic Route 1. There is plenty of every kind of lobster to eat and even a seafood cooking contest! But there is much more than that. There are tours of coast guard rescue ships, navy ships and a shuttle bus to get you all around to the things you just cannot miss!
The Maine Lobster Festival is not the only celebration of seafood we have in Maine, the Yarmouth Clam Festival is held in July and has been going on for more than 40 years! The Clam Festival also has a 6 mile river and kayak race AND clam shucking contest!

The Winter Harbor Lobster Festival in August, is part of the Schoodic Arts for All two week celebration and this lobster festival also includes the final Lobster Boat Race of the season that we discussed in a previous post.

Frenchboro also hosts a Lobster Festival, this is an intimate island community accessible by boat that really gives you the real feel of a Maine lobstering community. But don’t let that make you think these folks don’t know how to have a great festival – they sure do! The Ferry’s depart from Bass Harbor, which is located on Mount Desert Island, where Acadia National Park is also located.

But there is so much more to Maine Seafood than lobsters and clams and if you are looking for something to do in September then The Eastport Salmon Festival and the Pemaquid Oyster Festival are the ones for you.

These are all family fun events. So loosen your belt and come join us for the best and freshest seafood in the world!

Another Way to Celebrate Maine Lobsters!

In Maine we have lobster rolls, lobster pie, lobster ice cream and even a LOBSTER BOWL, where it is our way of celebrating the High School All Stars in Football. It is an East meets West type of annual event and played during the summer to benefit Shrine Hospital programs.

This year was especially interesting as Maine was experiencing quite a heat spell and the players played in nearly 100 degree heat! And like many games it all came down to the Final few minutes!

We wanted to recognize all those that worked on this event and the players who played in it, it is for an important cause.

Just when you think you have heard “everything lobster” we will come up with something new to celebrate the bounty of the sea!

Welcome to our “Vacationland!”

On the bottom of the Maine License plate it reads “VACATIONLAND” . And on beautiful, sunny weeks like this one, it is no wonder why so many people choose to come up and visit. We just celebrated Independence Day and since it was on a Monday, many folks have chosen to extend their holiday right through the week. We have talked about places to go, things to do (and of course those things include eating tasty seafood) in this blog. We are sharing this video with you from YouTube,

so you can see what a typical day out on the water may be for lobstermen and women. Lobster doesn’t come from the grocery store, it comes from the hard work and dedication to get up on days that are sunny and stormy to bring it to you fresh from the ocean.

Fireworks all over Maine on the Fourth!

Even though many come up to Maine for the Lobster (and we are sure glad that you do), another Maine Tradition is Fresh Salmon, Peas and Strawberry Shortcake, once you get your fill of whatever your family tradition may be, everybody loves fireworks! *

We have lots of options. From small villages, with less crowds and often easier viewing for those with strollers or ambulatory challenges to large scale “knock ‘em dead” shows.

If you are unfamiliar with the “locals” short cuts, allow some extra time to get there. Streets are often blocked off and it may require a lot of walking.

Bangor just released their plans today. As you can see, there is a lot of things happening.

If you would like to pull a few traps, measure the lobster yourself or just watch how it is done, then a coastal lobster boat trip should be on your “To-Do” list! Lobster Boat trips are located many places along our coast and while you are touring you will see what it is like to be a real “Maine Lobsterman!”

You may see a lighthouse and many other critters, like seals, eagles and countless other waterfowl in their own environment, so make sure you bring your camera and binoculars! These trips are ideal for families, some boats focus on private tours where you and your family or company can have the whole boat to yourself!
Other boats bring larger groups the Captains are very accommodating to make sure you have a great experience! Here is a place to find more information!

Father’s Day weekend begins the 2011 Lobster Boat Race Season

Perhaps you are from outside of our area or maybe you are a local, but either way, your calendar needs to include at least one appearance at a Maine Lobster Boat Race this summer! Whether you have a boat or have a friend that has one, watching the races from the water gives you the best view of the racers!

Many of the races have very good viewing opportunities from land. Here is the schedule of 2011 Race Season.

Here is a very good video of what you may see if you are at a Lobster Boat Race. Lobster Boat Races are family friendly and lots of fun.
